The Problem with Plastics (ESOL)

How does plastic tremendously affect people's lives?

Plastic tremendously affects people’s lives in different ways. Plastic impacted the world dramatically. It improved our lives in different ways; it also did damage and some issues.

It can improve people’s lives in different ways. An example of it is when we buy stuff at shops or supermarkets. It helps us by making it easier to carry the stuff we bought. Significantly, we Filipinos use our creativity and imagination to make something from plastics. We make lanterns - we call it ‘parol’ - made out of used plastics. Remarkably, plastic is accessible everywhere, it only costs 75 to 95 cents a pound which is extremely cheap.

Using plastic does have benefits and positive effects, however, there is also a hideous side about using plastics. Plastic caused so many catastrophic problems on our planet. It causes pollution, flooding and other types of natural phenomenon.

Image result for plastic clipartUsing plastic as packaging is also a bad habit that we do. Plastic has chemicals on it that could be poisonous on our health. Indeed, it takes more than one plastic to cause issues on our health but it could be worse if we keep doing it. Plastic is affordable and cheap which is why its everywhere. However, it does still depend on how you use it and if you're responsible enough. Us humans use plastic on everything, but using plastic on food can have bad side effects on our body. Using plastic as a wrapper on food is a bad habit us humans do. We can stop using plastic for wrapping our food and instead use paper bags. Paper bags are safe for the environment and do take less time to rot out instead of plastics.

In conclusion, plastic both effects us in positive and negative ways. It does still depend on us and how we use it. It will take us determination and effort to stop plastic, however, if we use plastic on important occasions only, we could stop or use less plastic.

Social Studies- Tribe Studies

In Social studies, we began studying about a tribe called the Matses. They are an indigenous tribe that lives in the Amazon Rainforest. We are supposed to write a paragraph about them.

Who are the Matsès? Interestingly, Mastsès - or as we call ‘ Jaguar People’- are an indigenous tribe that lives in the remote areas of the Amazon Rainforest, specifically, in the Javari River.

They use a method called ‘ Slash and Burn ‘ to create small-scaled farms. Planting crops is a great benefit for them because they don’t have any contacts with outsiders. Their primary food source is fishing but they also hunt and plant crops. Example of these foods is sweet plantains, maniocs, and roots such as beetroots, and carrots. They also hunt wild animals like wild boars. These things are basically the way they survive.

So how did their life on the land change? Their lives dramatically change when they began having an interaction with the outsiders. They began trading goods like clothing, food, and materials. These improved the lives of the Matsès. They began living in larger, fixed, super-nucleated and permanent villages. They stopped traveling into different parts of the forest and decided to stay in one specific area and continue living. They also stop creating farms all over the place causing to cut trees. Importantly, the lifestyle of the Matsès changed and improved. Committed to change, the tribe agreed to improve the way of their living and began contacting with outsiders which really had a strong impact on their community.

Some of them even chose to go out and face the real world and began living in rural cities or places, but some still chose to stay in the forest and continue living the way their ancestors or their parents lived.

Social Studies (ENE Research)

What went well? We presented our presentation last week and Miss liked the way how we explained how Joplin Tornado forms and how it devastated the province of Joplin.

What didn't go well? We forgot the diagram and we did have some issues on our way of presenting because we are not allowed to read a script.

What will you do next time? I will review my script and analyze every slide so I know what I'm going to say.

Our research is quite easy but we did have some problems about finding some responses about our Natural Event. I learned a lot when I'm researching about the Joplin Tornado, specifically, how a tornado forms.

Social Science ENE Research

What went well? We finished our slide and we just need to practice our lines.

What didn't go well? We didn't have enough time to present so we are going to continue it on Friday- well for me it's good because I need to practice my script-.

What can you do better? I think we don't need to improve or to do anything better because we have everything managed.

Passion Projects 19/11/2108

What is your Passion Project?
We are doing Community Sports for our Passion Projects. We picked to do basketball but we have encountered some difficulties and chose to do football for years 7 to 8

What have you learnt so far?
We've sent an email to Mr Hillard for permission to use both gymnasium and sports equipment.

How does this help you achieve your Passion Project?
It helps us by having permission for the gyms and the equipments we need.

What is your next step?
Our next step is to figure out what equipment we need and what are the rules are and how are we going to run the event.

What evidence do you have that this is something you need to do?
Because we don't have the right equipment and we need someone to provide it for us.

Please provide a screenshot or a photographic evidence of your work so far.

Passion Project - November 15 Thursday

For the next four weeks, we are trying to have an impact on the community in the way of sports. What we are trying to learn is to communicate and teach in front of an audience -basically primary kids- and teach them basketball. How are we going to  Me, Lindley, Gian, Jhade, Roswell, and Ray are going to teach basketball skills in different primary schools.

Brainstorm

An S.W.O.T analysis stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This is where you put everything like obstacles that can stop your plan in action or strengths that improve the chance of you having to accomplish your plans.

S.W.O.T Analysis

By using S.W.O.T analysis we found out our weaknesses and threats to our plan. This is necessary because we need to make a solution to the problems that can stop our ideas. Our plan is to ask the primary school's principals for their permission to have some primary students to go with us so they can learn some basketball skills. Our main school to ask is Hornby Primary because it's closer to Hornby High. If they didn't accept our invitation, there plenty more Primary Schools around Hornby. So and so forth.

ENE Research

What went well today? I started making the script for our presentation and we picked who is assigned to read every slide.

What do you need help with? Who can help you? I can manage every work from now on

What didn't go well today? I think that there was nothing that didn't go well today.

What can you do better? I should be more focused next time.

ENE Research - Social Studies

What went well today? We have done a lot this period like adding images, facts and a video about the Joplin Tornado.

Is there anything you need help with? Who can help you?
No, we don't need any help with anything because we can manage.

What didn't go well today?
Everything was fine.

What can you do better next time?
We only need to add more pictures and some more information and I think that we're done.

ENE Research - Social Studies

What went well? I started making a diagram and I'm close to finishing it. Frances researched why or how the town of Joplin became vulnerable to the tornado and what's the tornado's course.

Is there something you need help with? Who can help you? I think that we don't help but we do need some information on Joplin tornado.

What didn't go well today? Our diagram is still not done

How will you improve? By communicating or starting early.

Social Science - ENE Research

17.10.18

What went well today?
We have researched information about our topic. We also picked a specific tornado that occurred in the United States.

Is there anything you need help with? Who can help you?
I think that we need more information about tornadoes and how and what is it because it is not enough. Our supervisor or teacher and Google would be able to help us.

What didn't go well today?
We change our topics each time. We also didn't help each other that much

How will you improve on that next lesson? We will improve if we talked and cooperated properly.

Drypoint Print Making

1, What kind of printmaking is drypoint?

a.Relief (Woodblock and Linoblock)
b.Stencil (Silkscreen)
c.Lithography
d.Intaglio

2. How is the drypoint line created?
The drypoint is created by using a plexiglass and a sharp tool that can mark or engrave into the material.

3. What kind of line does it produce? Are they all the same?
It depends on how thick the sharp tool that you're using and how hard you push.

4. How do you hold the needle?
It depends on you on how you hold the needle but it's just like using a normal pen or a pencil.

5. What does the angle of the needle determine?
It determines how or what the outcome of the line that will be intact on the material.

6.The greater the pressure the deeper the                  ?
Lines and the mark will be, it will be also darker if you put ink on it.

7. Will all marks on the surface of the plexiglass print?
It depends on how hard you push because if the mark didn't actually take off material it will not print or be seen clearly.

8. How do you create different tones (gradations of light and dark?)
You create tones by using the paint. You can leave some ink on the side of your work and it will act like it has tone.

9. What do we wipe the ink off the plate with?
We used cooking oil so that we can take off the paint off the marks. We also use a rug or a tissue to wipe it.

10. What do we use to put ink onto the plate?
A piece of hard paper or a cardboard. We also used a rug and a mesh cloth.

11. What pressure do we use when applying the ink?
A right amount of pressure is needed so that the paint can go through the marks that you made, you need it to be right because if you put too much pressure it will be filled with ink but if you don't apply that much pressure the marks will not be seen clearly or visibly.

12. Compare and Contrast the two different kinds of printmaking: lino-block printmaking or drypoint, Which do you prefer? Why? I think that the drypoint is way easier to do because the lino art's material is harder than the drypoint's material.

What supervolcanoes could erupt in the future?
1.) Kilauea, US

2.)Villarrica, Chile

3.)Popocatepetl, Mexico

4.)Merapi, Indonesia

5.)Kirishima, Japan

What happens during an eruption?
When the magma chamber fills up completely, it could explode or eject lava. When magma reaches the land, it is then called a lava.  It could also eject smoke or ash which can affect the atmosphere. It could also affect the people who are living close to the volcano. For example, the Pompeii Volcano exploded and ejected, the ash fall got into the village so fast that the people living in there just turned into stones.

It could also have different effects in different places such as earthquakes, tsunamis, climatic effects, famine and diseases, and more. These different casualties could possibly occur when a volcano erupted. Just like when Mt Pinatubo erupted, New Zealand had a snow about knee high so it could also affect different countries.

Building a Volcano

Equipment:
-Paper
-Tape
-Ice cream container lid/ carton
-Plastic Bottle
-Chemicals
-Flour Water
-Plaster
-Paint

Aim: To create an exploding volcano

Method:
-Put the bottle in the middle of the ice cream lid or the carton.
-Stick the bottle with sellotape.
-Put scrap paper around it to create the shape of the volcano then stick it in place with the sellotape.
-Put the paper into a mix of flour and water to create a paper mache then stick it to the scrap paper.
-Surround the paper mache with plaster so it can harden.
-Paint the volcano.
-Put the chemicals that can make a volcano explode.

Observation:
It didn't really work than we thought it would but it still exploded.
